Internal Medicine Emergency Coverage Policy and Procedure
Policy Number : 29
Date Issued : 11/1/2003
Prior Revision Date :
  Date Revised : 1/12/2007

PURPOSE:
To define the Internal Medicine policy for the proper procedure in the event that a resident/intern becomes unable to provide patient care.
SCOPE:

Applies to all interns and residents (hereafter all will be referred to as trainees) in the Internal Medicine training program on the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas campus.

PROVISONS:

The on-call resident will contact the Chief Resident.

Then the Chief Resident will call the list of trainees on a prepared list (current ward trainees excluded) until one is able to take over the night of call until 1:00 PM the next day.

The substitute will be excused from the current elective for the needed time.

If possible, the on-call resident will wait at the hospital to cover codes until the substitute arrives.  If this is not possible, the other members of the call team will cover codes until the upper level resident comes in to cover.

The substitute’s name will be taken off the prepared list until all names have been used.

It is expected that the on-call trainee will work for the substitute during a future call night.

If this policy is enacted during working hours, the Associate Program Director or Program Director should be notified of this change.

If this policy is enacted after working hours, the Associate Program Director or Program Director will be notified the next weekday.
