Leave Of Absence Policy For Physicians In
The Internal Medicine Training Program At Presbyterian Hospital Of Dallas

Policy Number : 4
Date Issued : 1994
Prior Revision Date : 09/1999
  Date Revised : 11/2002

PURPOSE To define policy and procedure regarding leave of absence (LOA).
SCOPE Applies to all interns and residents (hereafter all will be referred to as trainees) in the Internal Medicine training program on the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas campus.
PROVISIONS

All interns and residents in the Internal Medicine training program at PHD fall under the guidelines of Texas Health Resources’ (THR) Leave of Absence Policy and the American Board of Internal Medicine training requirements.

Additional requirements apply to physicians in Internal Medicine training.

Residents may take a leave of absence for any of the approved reasons in the THR Leave of Absence policy. However, the resident must extend training time to meet the minimum requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

The resident should notify the training Program Director in writing as early as possible of the request for LOA in order for proper coverage of the resident's assignment while on LOA and in order to determine the necessity for extending the resident’s training period upon return from LOA.

Vacation time may not be forfeited to reduce training time.
