Internal Medicine Policy on Work Environment

PURPOSE To establish an appropriate work environment that facilitates the professional and personal development and well-being of all residents who participate in the Internal Medicine Residency program at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas (PHD).
SCOPE

Applies to all interns and residents (hereafter all will be referred to as trainees) in the Internal Medicine training program on the Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas campus.

PROVISIONS

The following services will be provided and available to all trainees in order to minimize work that may be extraneous to the trainees’ educational programs.

  1. Appropriate Food Services and Sleeping Quarters (Refer to GME Meal Policy for Medical Students, Interns, Residents and Fellows)
  2. Patient Support Services:
    • Support Services for IV, phlebotomy, and transport activities must be available to reduce resident time spent on these routine activities. (See the ACGME Duty Hours Work Program document)
  3. Effective Laboratory And Radiologic Information Retrieval System
  4. Medical Records System 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (Refer to GME Policy for Completion of Medical Records at PHD)
  5. Appropriate Security And Personal Safety Measures
  6. Medical Reference Material – 24 hour access to the medical library as well as on-line computer resources throughout the hospital
  7. Educational Centers for conferences with up to date audio-visual equipment.
